Afghan Hound Rescue

There are many ways to own an Afghan Hound, or rather be owned by one. One of the most rewarding is to take one that has fallen on hard times. This noble, elegant and independant breed is like no other in so many ways, but in one way all dogs are the same, each deserves to be loved, cared for and to have an adoring family to call thier ownet.

If you feel you are a special person or family that could offer one of these exceptional Afghan Hounds a home, that you have the patience and dedication to share your world with one, then please look through those unfortunate ones below and let the one who looks out from this page and tugs at your heart into your life.

You will be repayed a thousand times over with the love of the hound that is destined to be yours.

Please contact the local rescue officer listed alongside the adoptee for more information

Please note - Each regional club operates its own rescue section and officers. Both they and we have a strict criteria for the acceptance of potential adoptors to ensure each hound is placed in a suitable home. All decisions made by these clubs is final and the AHA will not enter into discussion on any matter arising from another clubs policies or requirements.

Currenty Seeking Home

No dogs are currently looking for a new home

All the dogs below have found new homes!!

Thank you to all the people who have taken them into their homes and their hearts!

Freddie is a 3 year old golden boy. He has been castrated ( in April ). He is in his second home, I understand the first move was due to a marriage break up. Freddie used to live on a farm and most of his walks were over the fields so he didn’t see many other dogs. His owner has now moved back to a village and Freddie meets other dogs on his daily walks. He is a big strong dog and is aggressive towards the dogs that he meets. His owner feels that she can no longer cope. Someone else has been to meet him and walk him and Freddie was much better. Two dogs off the lead approached him and he ignored them. He is also better when the husband walks him. It could be that he is being protective towards his owner and also knows that he ‘rules the roost’.

Freddie is not used to small children. He has not shown any sign of aggression towards humans. He seems to enjoy their company. He will need to go to an understanding home where there are no other dogs. He is getting better since his castration so maybe in a few months his hormones will be a lot more settled.

Alfie is a 3year old gold dog. He has been handed into a general rescue centre. His owner said he attacked her old dog. Due to this it would be best if he went to a home with no other dogs or cats. They have not tried Alfie with other dogs yet. When he sees them he barks and wags his tail. He has not shown any signs of aggression with people. He is a little timid to start with but soon rolls over on his back for a tickle or pokes with his paw demanding a stroke. He was very underweight but is now ‘eating like a pig’. I understand his coat is a mess.

Zak is in urgent need of his forever home. He is in kennels at the moment, and is used to living in the house. He is 10 years old and a black masked pale gold. His coat has been clipped off and needs a ‘tidy up’ Zak is not used to small children so couldn’t go to a home with them. He has lived with 2 small dogs and also other Affis.

At the moment he is very overweight and needs a sensible diet and exercise. He is going to have a vet check up and due to his age rescue will cover any large bills he may incur in the future.

Zak is a lovely boy and is not asking for much, a soft bed in a warm house, peace and quiet and someone to love him.

We think he may be an Afghan, he was taken in as a stray in the Rochdale area and was in a bad way. They have clipped him off and think he is about 3 years old. His colour has been described as a kind of pale grey/silver with darker bits like marble.

Bob has been moved to a sanctuary in South Wales and needs a loving home. He looks so sad. If you can help in anyway or know anything about him please contact me.

Sophie.

Sophie is 5 years old and due to family circumstances is in need of a loving home. She can be apprehensive of strangers until she knows them and will be quite aloof. She used to object strongly if left for more than an hour but is a lot better now especially if she has had a good walk first.
She will often ‘bark and shout’ when she is out walking on the lead if she see’s another dog. If she is told firmly NO and made to stop and wait until the other dog has passed she is better than she used to be. Otherwise a halti can be used.
At home she lives with small dogs. She is dominant and the ‘pack leader’. Sophie is very affectionate and loves company, she is also very intelligent. To sum her up, she hates cats, she needs constant attention when on the lead and other dogs are approaching her. She needs an experienced affi person who can give her the attention she craves and is at home most of the time. She enjoys a good long daily walk.

Do you know of anyone who can offer a loving home to two female Afghans aged 7 and 9? One is black & tan and the other is gold (or red).

They are presently with the RSPCA in the Midlands area and I understand they are to be clipped off and spayed. They lived with an elderly owner who does not appear to have been able to care for their coats or exercise them.

The RSPCA would like to rehome them together, so if you know of anyone who could help out, they would very much like to hear from you. It will be OK if older children are in the household.

The RSPCA have a Tazi in thier centre. This is a relation to the Afghan Hound but the reason I am posting it here is Izzy needs a new home desperately and has been looking for sometime. The RSPCA say the following about her:

Izzie came in to the centre with her sister Solo because their owners relationship broke up. Izzie is a very sweet dog that can be a little nervous so will require a patient, quiet home where she can feel safe and secure. Izzie would be suitable to libe with children over the age of 10 years, not suitable with cats or small animals but has lived with another dog so we would be happy to try. If you are interested in offering Izzie a home you will need fencing that exceeds 6" as these dogs are very agile and can jump!
The Kalagh Tazi is known as the desert Afghan Hound, it is worth researching the breed to find out more about it.

This is Sonny. He's had a bit of a tough life and is now seeking a new home due to his current owners feeling it best for him to get more 1to1 attention than they can currently give. They report he has no real vices - apart from wanting permanent cuddles and an aversion to being brushed thoroughly! He's an identichipped, vaccinated, castrated male domino. Used to cats, children and is a useless guard dog because he will cuddle anyone given the chance! Thought to be around 6 -7 years old.
